Oslo and Helsinki both achieved zero pedestrian and cyclist deaths in 2019. It was achieved by:
- lowering the speed limit to 30kph (20mph)
- discouraging car use through road and parking charges
- creating better separation between cars, bikes, and pedestrians
The Vision Zero movement is spreading – places in the UK like London, Liverpool, and our neighbours Oxfordshire have now signed up and are making significant changes.
It’s very sad that West Northants refused to even look into the possibility of a 20mph speed limit when this motion was put to the council, even though 20mph is the urban speed limit recommended by the UN and WHO, with overwhelming evidence that it saves lives.
