
The Department of Transport states that over 40% of urban journeys are less than 2 miles – a distance that most people could easily walk or cycle, if there was safe infrastructure.
This fact is stated on page 11 of a new government Active Travel policy: Gear Change: a bold vision for cycling and walking, published in 2020. This is not just another document – it’s a fundamental policy change that’s backed up by funding (even after the cuts of November 2022).
